SCOTT COLLINS, Interim Dean, College of Health and Human Sciences
As a registered radiologic technologist, radiation therapist and certified medical dosimetrist, Scott Collins joined the faculty of SIU in 1999 as a visiting instructor to help teach the inaugural class of the radiation therapy specialization within the radiologic sciences program. In 2000, he became an assistant professor and program director for the radiation therapy specialization. Later, in 2005, he initiated the required documents to establish the medical dosimetry program at SIU, which was the first graduate level program in the College of Applied Sciences and Arts. His teaching and research interests include all aspects of radiation oncology, program development and online education, as well as a wide variety of managerial topics in the health care arena. Dr. Collins has served in a variety of roles at SIU, including program director for the radiation therapy and medical dosimetry programs as well as radiologic sciences as a whole, director of the School of Allied Health that evolved into the School of Health Sciences and now as the interim dean for the new College of Health and Human Sciences.
MICHAEL BEHRMANN, Associate Dean, Chair, Automotive Technology
With over 30 years of experience in the global automotive and ground mobility industry, Mike Behrmann has been involved in numerous facets of the retail, wholesale, fleet operations and academic areas both nationally and internationally. Starting his career as an automotive technician, today he is the associate dean for the College of Health and Human Sciences and the chair of the Department of Automotive Technology. At SIU, he continues his passion of linking education with industry to work together in accelerating and driving forward both organizations and individuals.
CRAIG ANZ, Interim Director, School of Architecture
Craig Anz, Ph.D., received his Bachelor of Environmental Design from Texas A&M University, his professional Master of Architecture and Urban Design from the University of Texas at Arlington and a Master of Architectural Studies from the University of Texas at Austin, focusing on architectural theory, criticism, urbanism, and cultural history. He then extended this education with his published dissertation from Texas A&M, titled “Critical Environmentalism – Towards an Epistemic Framework for Architecture, Urban Design, and Community Development,” emphasizing a composite assemblage of epistemology, critical social theory, environmental discourse, ecosystem resources, architecture, urban design and community development. As such, it engages broader definitions for architecture and design, significantly embodied and epistemologically co-substantiating within a shared, socio-environmental life-place. Dr. Anz is currently a professor for the Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Architecture, where he teaches architectural research methods, urban design, environmental systems and thesis. He looks forward to this leadership opportunity to progress his fidelity toward global design education in his current role as the director and architectural studies coordinator, while conveying a broad array of knowledge, professional experiences and community advocacy perspectives.
MICHAEL BURGENER, Chair of Aviation Technologies and Interim Chair of Aviation Management & Flight
Mike Burgener is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Aviation Technologies and has over 30 years of combined aviation experience. In addition, he simultaneously serves as interim chair of the Department of Aviation Management and Flight. He started his career in aviation technologies while serving in the United States Air Force as an aircraft mechanic. Mr. Burgener continued to develop professionally while working for US Airways as its manager of maintenance programs. He later served as the department head of the aircraft maintenance program at Trident Technical College in Charleston, South Carolina.
MATTHEW GIBLIN, Director, School of Justice and Public Safety
Matthew Giblin joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University in 2005 as an assistant professor in the criminology and criminal justice program. He currently serves as the director and professor in the School of Justice and Public Safety, a unit formed in 2019 bringing together programs in criminology and criminal justice, paralegal studies and public safety management. He teaches and conducts research in the areas of organizational theory and behavior and criminal justice systems. He is the author of two books (“Leadership and Management in Police Organizations” and “Organization and Management in the Criminal Justice System”) and has researched and published in areas addressing police practices, school safety, organizational accidents and personal protective behaviors, among other topics.
REZA HABIB, Director, School of Psychological and Behavioral Sciences
Dr. Reza Habib received his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Toronto in 2000 working with Dr. Endel Tulving. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Rotman Research Institute in Toronto. He joined SIU as an assistant professor in the fall of 2003. Dr. Habib's research is on human memory, with expertise in understanding the neurobiology of human memory using brain imaging (fMRI), the impact of aging on memory and the application of laboratory-based learning methods to improving student learning in the classroom. Dr. Habib has published over 40 peer-reviewed research articles with colleagues in Canada, Sweden, Germany and the United States. He has served in numerous administrative roles at SIU, including director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Psychology and director of the University Core Curriculum, and he is currently serving as the director of the School of Psychological and Behavioral Sciences.
RICHARD MCKINNIES, Interim Director, School of Health Sciences
Richard McKinnies, an associate professor and interim director for the School of Health Sciences, is a four-degree SIU Carbondale alumnus. Dr. McKinnies has been teaching at SIU Carbondale since 2006, having earned his bachelor’s degree in 2003 in the same program that he now teaches in. He later received his Ph.D in 2020. Dr. McKinnies has published over 32 peer-reviewed research articles with colleagues in the United States. His work as an “effective educator” with a “student/patient focused teaching philosophy,” his research efforts, and professionalism with colleagues are among several reasons for Dr. McKinnies’ selection for the College of Applied Sciences and Arts’ 2016 E.J. and Mary C. Simon Distinguished Faculty Award.
JULIANE WALLACE, Director, School of Human Sciences
Dr. Juliane Wallace received a Ph.D. in exercise physiology from Iowa State University in 2004 and joined SIU as an assistant professor of exercise science in the fall of 2004. Dr. Wallace’s research and teaching interests include exercise physiology, cardiovascular control, aging and the influence of physical activity in controlling blood pressure. Dr. Wallace has served in a variety of administrative positions at SIU, first as the founding program director of exercise science, department chair for kinesiology and interim chair of the Department of Public Health and Recreation Professions and associate dean of the SIU Graduate School. She currently is serving as the director of the School of Human Sciences.
VALERIE BROOKS WALLIN, Chief Academic Advisor for the College of Health and Human Sciences
Valerie Brooks Wallin is the chief academic advisor in the College of Health and Human Sciences and has 26 years of service at SIU. She is a Saluki through and through, having earned both her bachelor’s degree in advanced technical studies and her master’s degree in health education at SIU. She began her career in academic advising in the School of Art and Design in the College of Liberal Arts.
