  • Nearly 80 people representing SIU, three community colleges and four high schools attended the 2018 Cybersecurity Day in October hosted by the School of Information Systems and Applied Technologies and supported by the SIU Security Dawgs.
  • Nearly 7,000 people and 180 aircraft attended the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association Fly-In event in early October hosted by the aviation program at Southern Illinois Airport.
  • The Flying Salukis are headed to the National Intercollegiate Flying Association championships after garnering an eighth straight Region VIII title earlier this fall. The nine-time national champions have qualified for the event 49 out of 50 years. The championships are May 13-18 at Southern Wisconsin Regional Airport and hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
  • A $98,000 donation to the Mortuary Science and Funeral Service program will mean renovations and additional equipment for the embalming lab and continued undergraduate research assistantships. The donation is from Mid-American Transplant Foundation. The renovations are expected to be complete by the start of the spring 2019 semester in January.
  • Richard Carroll, who will receive his master’s degree in Public Safety and Homeland Security Administration during Dec.  15 commencement exercises, is a nominee for the 2019 State Board of Community Colleges Excellence in Teaching Award in North Carolina. Sponsored by R.J. Reynolds, the award “provides statewide recognition of faculty members who exemplify the highest quality and standards of instruction throughout the NC Community College System,” according to the organization. Carroll is a fire protection technology instructor at Cleveland Community College in Shelby, North Carolina and taught at the school in an adjunct capacity before becoming a full-time instructor in 2014.  Carroll started the master’s degree program in the School of Architecture 18 months ago.
