The Flying Salukis are the 2015-2016 National Champions again! For the second year in a row, and the third time in the past five years, they have taken the national title at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association (NIFA) SAFECON hosted by The Ohio State University (OSU) at the OSU Airport (KOSU) in Columbus, Ohio. SAFECON stands for Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference. At the event, 29 teams comprised of almost 400 students competed in 12 different events, including aircraft recognition, navigation, precision landing, and message drop. SIU Flying Salukis received the National Championship Trophy, earning a total of 430 team points in the competition, 35 points higher than the second-place team from University of North Dakota (395 points) and 64 points higher than the third-place team from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University - Prescott. For some perspective, our Aviation Management and Flight program has approximately 300 aviation students at the Carbondale campus and this team surpassed schools and their teams with enrollments in excess of 1,000 aviation students.
