HCM undergraduate program earns certification

The Health Care Management undergraduate program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale recently earned select national certification from the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA).
“Certification gives a seal of educational excellence and distinguishes the program from other similar programs,” Sandra K. Collins, associate professor and program director, said. “Prospective students, graduate programs, and even employers may look specifically for AUPHA certified programs since the seal of approval granted with certification assures graduates have met the highest standards as outlined by AUPHA.”

Flying Salukis win fifth straight regional title

Another dominating performance, including top finishes in seven of nine events, paved the way for the Southern Illinois University Flying Salukis to win the National Intercollegiate Flying Association Region VIII title Saturday, Oct. 10.

Success Awaits in Applied Sciences and Arts
Just last month, Forbes listed Southern Illinois University among their Most Entrepreneurial Research Universities 2015 list. Coming in at 27, SIU is giving Ivy league schools like Harvard (ranked 25) a run for their money. CASA has demonstrated a history of excellence among alumni.

SIU reintroduces skydiving club

Brett Baker, a sophomore from Marissa studying aviation flight and management, restarted the registered student organization on Friday.
“I wanted to start this RSO up again because I have a love for adrenaline rushes and trying new things,” Baker said. “This club will give the university an extreme sport option and it also allows for college students to try something new and exciting. It’s good to get away from school work for a day and do something crazy.”

University jumps 36 spots in annual U.S. News rankings

Southern Illinois University Carbondale moved up 36 spots – one of the largest jumps of any university – in U.S. News & World Reports Best Colleges Rankings for 2016, which were released on Wednesday.

Dosimetry Students Receive Scholarships
CASA would like to congratulate five (5) of our current dosimetry students on receiving scholarship awards from the professional association: AAMD (American Association of Medical Dosimetrists Education and Research Foundation). Each of them will receive a cash award of $4,200. This is out of a total of 15 recipients from all dosimetry programs in the nation.

Openings remain for ‘Give Adults a Smile Day’

Openings remain for the fifth annual “Give Adults a Smile Day” at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The event, which offers access to free dental services for community members, is Friday, July 10, at the SIU Dental Hygiene Clinic, 1365 Douglas Drive, located west of the SIU Arena.
The session will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Appointments can be made calling 618/453-8826.

SIU female aviators win 2015 Air Race Classic

Air Race Classic champions -- Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Jessica Reed, left, and Stephanie Armstrong, right, with their trophies and the plane the two used to win the All Women’s Cross Country 2015 Air Race Classic, June 22-25. The title is the first in SIU history. Reed is a senior in aviation management from Schaumburg; Armstrong, a May 2013 aviation management graduate from Seneca, is an assistant instructor at the university.

Applied Sciences and Arts sets research symposium
Registration continues for entries into the College of Applied Sciences and Arts’ second multidisciplinary research symposium. The event is set for Nov. 21.
The symposium is open to all professionals, faculty and students from any university. The sessions will feature presentations, posters, and panel discussions that involve Allied Health, Architecture, Interior Design, Fashion Design and Merchandising, Automotive Technology, Aviation Management and Flight, Aviation Technologies, and Information Systems and Applied Technologies.
The submission deadline is Aug. 17. Successful presenters will be notified Sept. 21. For more information, visit the symposium website or contact Chad Schwartz, assistant professor, in the School of Architecture.

Trip offers insight into architecture, historic sites

For nearly 30 years, Jon Davey, a professor in the Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Architecture, has taken students on a journey that goes beyond a building’s four walls.
The participants in the annual travel study program recently returned from a two-week visit to Italy, Greece, the Greek Isles and Turkey. The “Le Petit Grand Tour D’Architecture,” or “The Little Grand Tour of Architecture,” gave students insights into historic sites, architecture and the culture. The students receive from three to six credit hours.

SIU providing free dental services to children
There are several opportunities this summer for children in the region to receive free preventive dental services through the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Dental Sealant Grant Program.
The clinics are for children from three to 17 years old. Services will include exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants performed by senior dental hygiene students. The exam fulfills state requirements for children who will be entering kindergarten, second and sixth grade this fall. There is no fee for the dental services. Children who are members of the “AllKids” program should bring their medical card.

Seven earn Faculty and Staff Excellence Awards

SIU System President Randy Dunn will host a ceremony and reception honoring the recipients of the Faculty and Staff Excellence Awards, as well as campus authors, at 3 p.m. Monday, April 27, in Morris Library’s Hall of Presidents and Chancellors.
The Excellence Award recipients are: Karen Renzaglia (Scholar Excellence Award), Gary Apgar (Teaching Excellence Award), Justin Filiberto (Early Career Faculty Excellence Award), Sara Baer and Cheryl Jenise Wilson (Women of Distinction Excellence Award), and Rachel Shurtz and Jeff Goelz (Staff Excellence Award).

SWIC students can earn SIU aviation degree

Students will be able to take SIU Carbondale’s aviation management courses at SWIC in Belleville through off-campus classes, possibly as early this summer. Tenured and adjunct SIU Carbondale faculty will teach the courses on weekends, and students could potentially complete a Bachelor of Science degree in aviation management in as few as 16 months, José R. Ruiz, chair of the Department of Aviation Management and Flight, said.

United Airlines-SIU Career Day is Saturday

Participating alumni include pilots, dispatchers, mechanics, flight attendants, and others. About 30 alumni who work with United Airlines are volunteering to make the trip and talk with students. The discussions will center on careers in aviation and at the airline, and there will be a campus tour, including the Transportation Education Center.

Medical dosimetry graduates excel on exams

Recently, 17 graduates took the Medical Dosimetry Certification Board (MDCB) exam and passed on their first attempt. The 100 percent pass rate by SIU Carbondale graduates compares to the national average pass rate of 78.5 percent for all accredited dosimetry programs. According to the MDCB, the average pass rate for everyone who took the exam this year was 67 percent. Scott Collins, director of the School of Allied Health, said SIU’s five-year average pass rate is 98.6 percent.

State’s top teacher returns to SIU for lecture

Michael Behrmann, chair of the Department of Automotive Technology, said Elza is an “outstanding educator who displays the exceptional qualities one looks for in a teacher and mentor.” Along with designing a challenging curriculum, Elza never gives up on his students, Behrmann said.
“His students learn to understand why they are being challenged, but he also makes learning fun so that they are motivated to challenge themselves,” Behrmann said.

‘Saluki App Competition’ winners announced

SIU students or student-led teams submitted 10 creative app entries for the third annual contest. The entries included a virtual book club, games, apps to connect people with gym partners or share pictures and videos. Online voting determined the winners of the Popular Choice awards while a panel of judges selected the other winners.

SIU, Bosch Automotive celebrate partnership

The dedication today (April 9) of the Bosch Automotive Parts Center in Southern Illinois University Carbondale's Transportation Education Center was a celebration of a longstanding partnership that benefits students while they are in school and after they graduate.
The facility in the Transportation Education Center is the central hub for connecting students to the public and providing quality automotive parts students need to perform their laboratory experiments. The center will also house the department’s retail parts and service operations office, where the public interacts with the department and its operations.

New program meets Chicago-area students’ needs

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is bringing a new degree-completion program to Chicago-land.
Students in the Chicago area seeking a bachelor’s degree in hospitality and tourism administration can now attend classes at University Center of Lake County (UCLC) in Grayslake and earn an SIU degree. The program also includes some online classes.
Nicole Davis, an SIU faculty member in the Carbondale program and coordinating counselor for the off-campus program, said the degree-completion program fills a growing need for Chicago-area students.

2015 HONORS DAY
Each Spring semester an Honors Day Recognition Ceremony is held for undergraduate students exhibiting high achievement. Qualification for recognition is determined at the end of the third week of the Spring semester. Recognition at that time will be accorded to a full- or part-time undergraduate student who has attained an undergraduate cumulative grade point average at SIU Carbondale of 3.50 or better and, if applicable, a 3.50 or better cumulative average in all undergraduate work (including transfer credit) recognized by SIU. This year the Honors Day ceremonies went well last Saturday, April 11, 2015. The University event starts at 2:00pm in the Student Center Ballrooms, followed by the College ceremony at 3:30pm in the TEC (Transportation Education Center). More than 100 students were recognized by Chairs, Directors, faculty, staff, families and friends. Mr. Ralph Tate, Professor of Automotive Technology, was the Master of Ceremonies.

Professor traded M16s for mouths
Not many people are able to connect bullets to toothbrushes.
Faith Miller spent a decade in the military before reaching her "flux capacitor" moment and becoming the director of the SIU dental program.
After beginning classes at SIU in 1979 studying foreign languages, Miller flunked out, not seeing the program as a future career. She then took one semester at John A. Logan College before leaving college behind.
“This was one of those things where you just really don’t know what to do,” Miller said. “You start looking through the school catalog trying to find the classes with the least amount of work and the least amount of math. Nothing was appealing.”

Lawmakers honor SIU's Flying Salukis

Southern Illinois University’s aviation team was honored Thursday, Feb. 26, at the Illinois State Capitol.
The Flying Salukis are the national champions, again, as they won the National Intercollegiate Flying Association competition in May and were recognized with a resolution by the House of Representatives. It was the team’s ninth win since 1975 and second in four years.
“It’s our way of honoring their efforts," said state Rep. Terri Bryant, R- Murphysboro. "To have all of your colleagues here, stand up and recognize the school that’s in your district … it’s just a nice honor for them because it doesn’t happen for everyone.”

Flying Salukis to be honored at State Capitol

Members of the 2014 National Intercollegiate Flying Association championship team will receive a resolution honoring their achievement at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, in the House chamber. University officials, including SIU President Randy Dunn, will be among those present during the ceremony. The 2014 championship marked the second in four years, and the ninth in the program’s history.

Fashion design showcase set for April 29
Student designers at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will once again present the latest in fashion and clothing trends at the 2015 Fashion Design and Merchandising student showcase and fashion show.
This year’s showcase includes the works of five student designers who have been creating their final collections. The event is at 7 p.m., April 29, in the Student Center ballrooms. The event is free and open to the public.

DENTAL HYGIENE STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN "1 DAY STAND AGAINST TOBACCO" CAMPAIGN
The university will participate in a national “1 Day Stand Against Tobacco” campaign from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Nov. 19, in the Student Center. SIU Carbondale is one of many campuses across the country who has adopted a smoke-free policy. The campaign, supported by the Tobacco-Free College Campus Campus Initiative Challenge, is designed to raise awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke and help tobacco users to quit.

GULFSTREAM GIII (C20) AT KMDH - SIU AVTECH
Last Tuesday was a great day for our Aviation Technologies (AVT) Department. We received a Gulfstream III C20A jet aircraft that had been used to transport military leaders in Europe and Africa by the U.S. Navy. Built in 1982 and with a unit cost of $37 million, the aircraft has more than 21,700 hours and it was its last flight on Tuesday.

The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the SIU Carbondale Community Dental Center, which is west of the SIU Arena.

Alumni Association helps 41 students with books
The SIU Alumni Association has awarded approximately $20,000 worth of textbooks and supplies for the 2015 spring semester to 41 Southern Illinois University Carbondale students. The Association hosted a ceremony Jan. 20 to gather students, family, friends, and college deans for the distribution of the materials.

SIU Automotive Research
Offering one of the few Automotive Technology degrees in the country, Southern Illinois University’s new Automotive/Aviation Transportation Education Center includes three facilities designed around the program’s instructional and research curriculum. Gensler led the programming and design phase of the project and guided the university through the LEED® certification process towards the goal of silver rating.

Saluki Aviators to compete in Air Race Classic
Four women in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Aviation Management and Flight program will compete in June in the 2015 Air Race Classic.
The two teams will be among those competing in the air race, which will cover about 2,400 nautical miles in four days, June 22-25. The 39th annual event will start in Fredericksburg, Va., and end in Fairhope, Ala.
