Student is finalist in national design competition
A Southern Illinois University Carbondale student’s vision of a future classroom is among the finalists in a nationwide design competition.
Sara Diesburg, a senior interior design major from Paxton, is one of five finalists who will present their projects to judges and meet with Steelcase executives in Grand Rapids, Mich., Jan. 11-13.

Applied Sciences and Arts to host research symposium
The submission deadline for the 2014 research symposium hosted by College of Applied Sciences and Arts is Oct. 22.
Symposium topics include but are not limited to architecture, allied health, information systems and applied technologies and transportation. The symposium is also open to faculty and students from other universities. Work submitted for publication must be original and not previously published or under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Architecture students to feature design work in library
Under the direction of Chad Schwartz, assistant architecture professor, students from “Architecture 351 Design III: Context” created imaginative structures to place throughout the library to engage library patrons through various senses and themes. Visitors can come to understand the creations through sight, sound, smell and touch.

Ceremony will honor sister's devotion to teaching
They followed different career paths -- one to aviation and the other education -- but sisters LuAnn Gatewood and Gina Gatewood Trover shared a love of teaching.
A ceremony honoring their commitment and memory will take place Thursday, Aug. 28, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Transportation Education Center with the dedication of the LuAnn Gatewood and Gina Gatewood Trover Weather Dispatch Center. The ceremony is set for 11 a.m.

Flying Salukis win second title in four years

With 11 team members scoring 349 points, the Flying Salukis earned the 2014 National Intercollegiate Flying Association championship on May 17 at The Ohio State University Airport. This is the ninth national title in program history; the team finished third in 2012 and 2013 after winning the championship in 2011.

Moore, a May health care management graduate, are recipients of the 2014 Healthcare Organization Management Award. Architecture grads thrive on unique project

Andrea Stegeman and Gabrielle Lowe will one day be licensed architects, and both are confident that the different perspective they will bring to their work will be thanks to their “outside-the-box” education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Their educational journey included being part of a design/build/service project on a tropical island some 1,700 miles away from Carbondale this spring.

Enrollment to jump for off-campus programs

The university’s off-campus military programs are projected to increase by roughly 25 percent this summer, compared to summer 2013.
Gayla Stoner, director of distance education and off-campus programs, said she will be excited to see enrollment jump.
“This time last year we had 182 students registered on military locations, and this year we have 243 at the same time,” Stoner said. “This is huge.”

SIU students beautify Carbondale in honor of 'Austin's Day'

SIU students and faculty spent the day making Carbondale a little more beautiful in honor of students that were in the midst of school shootings. The SIU Student Healthcare Management Association took part in digging a garden and cleaned up trash in support Austin's Day. The event was organized in Carbondale to also honor SIUC Health Care Management alumni Christina Meo, which survived a school shooting at the University of Northern Illinois.
Students say it is turning a negative event into a positive while helping those in their area.

Fashion show to highlight student creations
The annual student showcase and runway fashion show presented by seniors in Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Fashion Design and Merchandising program will help shake off these late winter doldrums. Nine student designers, including one male student, are working feverishly on their ensembles of clothing for young women and men for the runway fashion show, which starts at 7 p.m. April 24 in Student Center Ballroom D. Admission is free and the public is welcome.

Security dawgs finish fourth in the Midwest
SIU Carbondale, which won the Illinois Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition in February, competed against the top teams from Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Wisconsin, along with one “at-large” team from the region. The ‘Security Dawgs’ are a registered student organization.

SIU Offers Online Health Care Management Degree

A unique, accelerated, flexible format allows degree completion within two years after students finish their core coursework. The health care management courses are offered as eight-week-long classes that students can begin whenever they choose, taking one or more courses at any given time. The same experienced faculty members that provide instruction for the campus program teach the online program.

Aviation Program Earns Key FAA Certificate
Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s aviation flight and aviation management programs recently received Federal Aviation Administration certification that reduces the required flight time for graduates interested in becoming airline pilots. SIU is among a group of about 40 universities in the nation to receive the FAA certification, David A. NewMyer, department chair, said.

Security dawgs to impress at regionals

The Security Dawgs will continue to protect systems and their reputations at the Midwest Regional Cyber Defense competition.
The SIU Security Dawgs are bound for regionals after their win at the state competition on Feb. 15. This was their second consecutive win and sixth title overall.
Tom Imboden, assistant professor of Information Systems Technologies and coach to the SIU Security Dawgs said the team will not receive compensation for winning, but employers are influenced by students’ abilities in competitions.
“We don’t receive any funding for winning these competitions, but students do have the reward of displaying their skills before employers from large companies,” Imboden said. “These employers want resumes from competing students before the competition and then watch each individual perform to see if they have potential to be hired.”

Dawgs compete to protect against Internet crime

In the wake of the Target Corp. security breach and other online identity fraud cases, SIU's Security Dawgs are the type of anti-hackers businesses covet in the digital age.
The Security Dawgs are a Registered Student Organization on campus that focuses on and competes in computer and network security. The team won the Illinois Cyber Defense Competition on Feb. 15 for its second consecutive state title and third since 2006.

How to Get a Job at Google

LAST June, in an interview with Adam Bryant of The Times, Laszlo Bock, the senior vice president of people operations for Google — i.e., the guy in charge of hiring for one of the world’s most successful companies — noted that Google had determined that “G.P.A.’s are worthless as a criteria for hiring, and test scores are worthless. ... We found that they don’t predict anything.” He also noted that the “proportion of people without any college education at Google has increased over time” — now as high as 14 percent on some teams. At a time when many people are asking, “How’s my kid gonna get a job?” I thought it would be useful to visit Google and hear how Bock would answer.

Cyber Security Dawgs capture state title
The Southern Illinois University Carbondale “Security Dawgs” are once again state champions.
The registered student organization defeated six other teams to win the Illinois Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition on Feb. 15 for a second consecutive year.
