Dean’s Message

Welcome to the spring 2019 edition of the e-newsletter for alumni and friends!

Thank you for your support

The third annual SIU Day of Giving took place on March 6. Within a 24-hour period, the College of Applied Sciences and Arts raised more than $33,998 with 146 gifts. The total amount of raised funds increased by 173.7% compared to last year.

Among 33 participating units of the university, our College ranked third for raising the most gifts and fifth for most dollars raised. I am deeply grateful to so many donors for their generous support of our students and the College.

This year, the Day of Giving also served to launch our yearlong celebration of SIU’s 150th anniversary. My sincere thanks to the collective support of alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends – your gifts will help our students and help our University. Thank you!

CASA research on display

The college organized another research Flash Talks on April 17 to promote ongoing research and collaboration. The CASA Research Flash Talk 3.0 with the community took place at the Varsity Center in Carbondale.

This is the third time our college hosted the research event and this year we arranged more time for researchers to socialize and discuss potential collaborations. Each presenter used 3 to 5 minutes to briefly introduce their current, concluding, or proposed research and answered three questions:

  • “What is it?”
  • “Why is it of interest?”
  • “How might the community be further involved?”

There were 28 presentations by 39 faculty from multiple departments throughout the university.
